Building Stronger School Communities is dedicated to creating safer spaces for learning in memory of those we’ve lost to school violence. While statistics can never capture the depth of these tragedies, each number represents a life, a family, and a community forever changed. This work of building stronger, more connected school communities is essential – not just to prevent future tragedies, but to create the nurturing environments all our children deserve.

In this five-part series, we’ll explore evidence-based approaches to fostering belonging, connection, and support in our schools. These solutions aren’t just theoretical – they’re practical steps we can take today to help ensure every student feels known, valued, and protected.

Our exploration includes:

  • Part 1: The Fabric of Belonging (today)
  • Part 2: Every Student Known
  • Part 3: Beyond Security Systems
  • Part 4: Data That Matters
  • Part 5: Solutions Within Reach

Part 1: The Fabric of Belonging

Every morning in Madison schools, 25,000 students walk through our doors. Each one carries a simple question: “Do I belong here?” The answer shapes not just their day, but their entire educational journey. As both an engineer and former teacher, I’ve learned that the most powerful solutions often come from understanding both data and human experience.

Recent MMSD climate surveys tell us that 47% of our students feel disconnected from their school community [1]. This isn’t just a statistic – it’s a warning sign. The Journal of Educational Psychology’s landmark 2022 study shows that students with a strong sense of belonging are three times more likely to achieve their academic goals and 78% less likely to experience mental health challenges [2].

What creates this sense of belonging? The Search Institute’s Developmental Assets Framework identifies three key factors:

  • Consistent adult connections
  • Inclusive school environments
  • Early support systems [3]

Schools that prioritize these elements see dramatic results. In MMSD schools with strong belonging metrics, we see 23% fewer behavioral incidents and significantly higher academic achievement [1].

The National School Climate Center’s research confirms what many teachers already know: the strongest predictor of school safety isn’t visible security measures – it’s whether students feel they belong. Their data shows schools with high belonging scores experience 65% fewer safety incidents and 42% higher graduation rates [4].

Building this sense of belonging doesn’t require massive budgets or complex programs. It starts with ensuring every student has at least one trusted adult at school, creating inclusive spaces where all students see themselves represented, and implementing regular check-ins to identify students who might be struggling [3].

As we think about strengthening our schools, we must focus on weaving a stronger social fabric – one where every student feels known, valued, and supported. The data is clear: when we get belonging right, better outcomes follow.
