MADISON, WI (March 5, 2025) – The Wisconsin State Journal editorial board has endorsed Bret Wagner for Madison School Board Seat 3, citing his “laser-like focus on improving reading” as the deciding factor in their selection.

In their March 2nd editorial, the State Journal praised Wagner’s commitment to addressing the district’s critical literacy challenges, noting that “half of district students read below grade level, as do 9 out of 10 Black students.” The editorial board endorsed “Wagner and his spirited mission” for the April 1 election.

“I’m honored to receive the Wisconsin State Journal’s endorsement,” said Wagner. “They recognize the urgent need to prioritize reading proficiency. This aligns with my mission to make literacy Job #1 for our district. When children can read at grade level, they have the foundation for success in every subject and walk of life.”

The endorsement highlighted several key elements of Wagner’s literacy-focused platform, including:

  • Ensuring teachers are well-trained in science-based reading instruction
  • Creating smaller reading groups for targeted instruction
  • Aligning tutoring programs with district strategies
  • Holding regular public forums on reading proficiency
  • Engaging parents in understanding benchmarks and supporting reading at home

The editorial also noted that Wagner “would be the only Madison board member from Fitchburg, which sends one-third of its children to Madison schools” and “the only father on the board with children in the district.”

The election for Madison School Board Seat 3 will be held on April 1, 2025.
