Engineer and Former Teacher Bret Wagner Announces Campaign for Madison School Board

MADISON, WI – Bret Wagner, an engineer, former teacher, and parent of two MMSD students, today announced his campaign for Madison Metropolitan School District Board of Education.

Wagner’s campaign focuses on three key priorities: excellence through equity, empowering teachers as trusted professionals, and ensuring transparency through data-driven decisions.

“I’m running because every child deserves what they need to succeed,” said Wagner. “As both an engineer and former teacher, I understand how to build systems that work for everyone. We need to focus on fundamentals: ensuring students are ready to learn, giving teachers the freedom to teach, and using data to make smart choices.”

Wagner’s platform emphasizes practical solutions including:

  1. Universal access to school meals and mental health services
  2. Reducing administrative burdens on teachers
  3. Implementation of public performance dashboards
  4. Careful oversight of the proposed $607 million referendum

“Madison faces important decisions about our schools’ future,” Wagner noted. “With my background in both education and large-scale system implementation, I’ll bring a unique perspective to these challenges.”

Prior to his current role leading healthcare transformation initiatives, Wagner taught high school science and founded an education nonprofit supporting teachers. He lives in Madison with his wife Katie and their two children, who attend MMSD schools.

The general election is scheduled for April 1, 2025.
